Great Day to Ride!
It seemed like an early load at 5:45 this morning for a relatively short day of 71 miles, but after arriving at the motel at 12:30 in the heat of the day we were pretty happy to be done. I took a quick shower and walked to the Pizza Ranch down the street. I could have had another shower after that! It is 100 today.
It was a flat route today which allowed us plenty of time to take in the sites of Mitchell, including the Corn Palace and the Mitchell business district where some of us took in a local coffee shop.
Today we went through Pukwana, Kimball, White Lake, Plankinton and Mount Vernon on the way in. I had a good conversation with some local men at the convenience store in Mount Vernon who seemed to just be out riding around trying to figure out what we were doing. Of course, they had the usual questions, but were also helpful in providing information about tonight's rodeo in Mitchell. According to them, it is the largest rodeo in South Dakota. Some of the riders are planning to go.
Tomorrow we go to Sioux Falls. It sounds as though the winds may be pretty strong again, so we'll want to get out early and get as far as we can. It is another 71 mile day. Sunday is a rest day, which I am really looking forward to.
The riders are going to be very happy at tomorrow's sag stop. Today's package from Brenda included treats to be shared (although I have definitely kept some for myself). Thanks, Brenda!

Brenda is very good to you! and the group! Linda and I are both excited and nervous about tomorrow. We are in a bit of a dump of a motel - the air conditioner is not working and it is not really a non-smoking room. The fellow at the desk told us it was non-smoking but that there was no symbol on the door since it was a recent change. We didn't know how recent he meant until we drove around to the back side - we saw two cleaning ladies working in our room and several others. There were ashtrays outside each of the rooms sitting on the floor. They said they were changing them to non-smoking rooms at that moment. She said she had just sprayed them with their odor neutralizer. (Such a bizarre moment) There are no rooms available in the city or we would have gone somewhere else - but we also understand why we were able to get a room there so close to the event and why it isn't listed on the rides info sheet as one of the motels. Oh well...
Linda's sister is sagging for us on this ride which means we will meet her at three or four places along the way for some refills on ice and food.
Of course the wireless doesn't work here either so I'm working over a cellphone connection which is OK for a while.
Have fun in Sioux Falls!
